Regarding the index vs friction debate, on my Mercian Vincitore with touring fittings (similar to a Riv long low) I have the Rivendell supplied 1987 Shimano Deore XT "Rear Mech", Shimano el-cheepo 6 speed freewheel and Sachs PC51 chain. When using Shimano ratcheting barcons, the shifting smoothness and precision exhibited by this combo rivals Campy ergopower! Quiet, smooth and slick is the word! Wow!
