I wouldn't cold set it either. I usually just buy a longer axle and add some hub spacers. At worst, you may have to redish the wheel. If you agree with Sheldon's opinion that it's not even necessary for the axle to overlap the dropouts, I guess you don't even need the longer axle. (Not quite confident enough for that myself).
