How's this for a crude test? The bike's in a stand, you give the wheel a gentle spin, and watch it slow. As it nears stopping the heavy side of the wheel (usually the valve stem) causes the wheel to stop and swing back and forth until it comes to rest, a sudden stop indicatinfg a problem. It's amazing how long a Campy hub can do this. Disclaimer: Of course the chain needs to be off for the rear wheel, this ignores lots of variables, etc.
