A college classmate of mine, Charles Newcomb, worked in Italy for Rossin in 1980-81 or so. Charles told me that Sr. Rossin had run Colnago's frame building operations, and Sr. Rossin had said he left Colnago because of disputes over quality among other things. Then again, I always thought the Rossins I saw were better finished, if not better marketed.
I think a silly early '80's that Colnago ran spoke tons about the emphasis of marketing over quality. The ad showed a relieved Colnago bottom bracket being heated by a torch, heated cherry red. Yup, that's quality.
Of course, I don't see that much has changed. The paint has always been pretty suspect in the last decade. Then the Bitans were notorious for breaking. And the new bikes come with a 1 year guarantee on the frame!
