Subject: [CR]Fwd: [BOB] Coppi's bike

I'm forwarding this post from Patrick Moore of the iBoB list (formerly Bridgestone Owners), as I believe it may draw both interest and response from the CR list members. I hope you agree that this 'crosspost' is certainly on topic for our group.

You may need to scroll down a bit due to the cumbersome AOL headers.

With warmest regards to all in this Holiday Season.

The December issue of Cycling + (I got mine on Thursday) has an interesting retrospective on the Bianchi bikes typical of those Coppi rode in the late '40s and early '50s. The geometry looks pretty modern except for the very long chainstays, doubtless to accomodate the Paris-Roubaix gear mechanism.

Does anyone know what gearing Coppi and fellow riders used at the time? The single ring in the retrospective bike looks to be something like a 48 or 50 and the description says that they used 4 cogs, but what exactly was the setup? I think it was Ashley Korenblatt who said that Coppi climbed the Ventoux in a 48/19, which is a pretty damn high 67 or 68" gear for steep mountains, especially if the roads were dirt.
