Tom - I have an old Colnago brochure (Early '80s) which says about the Mexico:

"Light and agile for time trial" and "Frame Colnago Nuovo Mexico Profil Columbus SL Record tubing. Investment Cast fork crown dropouts and BB shell. Colnago special design ribs on top tube, down tube and chainstays. Rear triangle original Colnago tapering." etc. It is pretty much like the Colnago Super except for lighter tubing and the ribs, and the chromed lugs and rear triangle. I sold a few of these in those days, and just remember it being a nice light road bike. I'm not sure why they mentioned it being designed for time trial, when at the same time they had the "Aerodinamico" which had a down-sloping top tube, 650 front wheel and cowhorn bars. I don't recall any connection to the Mexico Olympics, but that must be where they got the name. I remember it did spur rumors about Mexican-made Colnagos for some time. Colnago has always had such a large facility that I'm sure he would have no reason to have frames made in Mexico. He made several marketing blunders in those days though, not the least of which was to allow mailorder to have free reign on his bikes. Who remembers the Colnago Supers selling for $299 or less at Bike-ecology? After that, no bike shop trying to make a living would touch them. They seem to be in that same position today.
