The Story goes: When the Merckx contingent arrived to begin their attempt on the hour, the Mexican officials wouldn't let them saying "papers were not in order" etc. ... Finally a series of "bribes" allowed progress, including the placing of Windsor decals on the very special Colnago that Ernesto had prepared for Eddy. This spelled the beginning of the end of that relationship as Ernesto was very upset that his moment (hour?) of glory was ruined... Merckx thereafter started his dealings with Ugo DeRosa.
