I think the wood may be a good idea since it spreads the load and is resilient. I machined an all aluminium arrangement like this for my Pop Brennan track bike. The clamping parts were shaped to the stays. I do not think flat plates are a good idea for fear of denting the stays. My warning is that eventually I detached a seat stay on the Brennan while this arrangement was on the bike. Who knows what the Brennan had been through in terms of prior crashes and repairs. I am concerned this type of clamp and brake may put weird loads on the seat cluster.

Anyway I did the prep, Bill Brennan did the brazing and I did the finish work. So I may have the last Brennan ever brazed!
