I use brakepads designed for steel rims on my wooden wheels-- they are leather centered and surrrounded by a soft rubber compound. I believe they are marketed as Fibrax. Before I found them I superglued roughout leather to kool stop shoes and they worked pretty well. The regular shoes grab and then let go and eat up the finish Alan Bernstein
