I spotted a reference to the use of wooden rims by the European pros of the late '70's, early '80's. It was in an interview with Roger De Vlaeminck, Mr. Paris Roubaix in the latest Cycle Sport.

Innovation: " To survive Paris-Roubaix, riders try out a lot of things, but I don't know if it helps"

"Some riders were very inventive. I remember Michel Pollentier using wooden rims. But on the first cobbles of the course those rims broke and the pieces knocked him off his bike. Imagine, Michel lying there on the side of the road. In the dirt I hardly recognised him." Your results may vary.
