The Z-2000 derailleur is saved, and is now back in the noble service of humankind!

I decided to try the "long-bolt & backup-hex-nut" idea since it didn't required any surgery on the derailleur itself. There was indeed room for a nut, but not very much: about a 2.5mm gap. The 5mm hex nuts that I had on hand were about 3.5mm thick (about .5mm on each end is wasted by a chamfer which isn't threaded but which helps to guide the screw home). I got out my grinder and reduced the thickness of the nut down to about 2mm thick in the center, 1mm thick on the edge (a 'domed' nut). I needle-filed it a bit to get rid of burrs, slapped it on the back of the binder bolt, and I was in business. And I barely notice that the total derailleur mass has increased from 184g to 184.5g.

Thanks to all!
