Subject: [CR]Adjusting BSA hubs (Warning: No Masi content)

Maybe some of you octogenarians can help me with this. I have some old Model B and C track hubs and they're not like modern hubs. There is only a flatted cone and locknut on one side. The other side has a cone without flats and no locknut. I guess it just screws hand tight against the non-threaded part of the axle. Should the lock nut -less cone go on the drive side to prevent it from loosening? What is the purpose of the square milled onto one end of the axle? Thanks.
