Thanks to all who replied, on and off-list, too many to thank individually - and not a one thought that ring was rideable.
The seller is a reputable dealer and would have taken it back without any fuss I'm sure, just nice to know you all agree with me. No I won't say who I got it from - unless they don't refund my money + shipping!
