It's a rule. There are very few employees who enforce it, and it's absurd in light of their professed environmental concerns, as long as the package is sturdy and repaired as necessary.

I, Jeff Slotkin, was a (damn good) driver there for ten years until my back crapped out, and there's no love lost now, but anyone who wants an explanation of their idiosyncrasies as they arise can feel free to ask. If FedEx gets your money instead, that's fine too.
