I'll keep this short since it's a bit OT. Yes, Shimano's DA index spacing was different than the rest of the lines. On a good note it is the same spacing as the new 9-speed stuff. So if you can find all the old stuff except the shifters you can use the new STI, bar-ends, or DT shifter. Just so everyone knows I did this many times so it does work.
