I wasn't going to post this unless someone asked, so here's an additon to the Maserati story:

I stopped at Shirk's bike shop last week. Now this place is out in the middle of Amish / Mennonite farms in Lancaster County. A bicycle is a tool, nothing more, you'll see men and women riding bikes in rain & cold, my knees are aching just driving the car. I stop in, and there's RB-2's with clamped on racks sitting outside in the rain. Walk in and the Maserati was up on a workstand. I ask to take a look at it, even rougher shape than I noticed before. Metallic green paint bubbled and flaked, clamps rusty and frayed. Oxidized alloy 3t bar and stem, weird-ish headset, Universal 61 centerpulls.

Here's something strange, Campy Tipo high flange hubs, laced to Mavic Open Pros! Then I take a look at the drivetrain. The original rear derailleur is still on there, a Campy Velox shifting a 14~32 freewheel. However the Stronglight crank and Valentino front shifter have been replaced by a new Campagnolo triple and Athena derailleur!

Luke just shakes his head and laughs...
