Speaking as a mechanic I can say yes and no. I've seen cranks break at the pedal eye because pedals have been tightened too tight gauled the crank and produced a stress-riser. I also know people that take pedals on and off all the time and have 50,000 miles on the cranks with no problems. As a collector I'd say use the washers so you don't scar the cranks in any way. Washers that will work can be found an just about any hardware store. Be careful not to use too thick of a washer, because you want as much of the pedal engaged with the crank as possible. enjoy, Brandon"monkeyman"Ives
