Subject: [CR]Thank you for suggesting updated brake pads

As I mentioned, I was looking for a retro looking brake pad that didn't cost a fortune and would still allow me to use my traditional wire wheel guides. (I like them but in all honesty they don't seem that neccessary - I can guide the wheel in without hitting the brake pads- what is the real need?). After looking all over at various Lbs, I decided to just buy some Shimano Ultegra 600 replacement pads and holders. Brake modulation is excellent, no squealing, and only $20 for all four pads. I suppose they save weight and even the pro shops don't sell replacement pads for every old brake shoe, only campy's models for the last ten years and the latest dura ace. The koolstops are hideous, and the pyramids are too cheap looking to inspire confidence. Well, the holders are not metal but grey plastic on these Shimano pads, but they do match my Mavic Ma40 grey anodized rims. At least now I have a better chance surviving traffic. Thank you to the mysterious stranger who suggested not comprimising on safety for looks. Btw, what is the advantage to the new longer brake pads that I see on modern road bikes? If long brake pads stopped better, certainly that would have been employed on high end bikes 30 years ago.
