I'm curious about this internal geared hub shifting thing. If I remember Sheldon's response a few days ago, he recommended using a derailleur type shifter. What is the action internally to get these to change gears? I assume it is in one gear or another and not both at the same time so any mechanism that will pull cable is capable of selecting gears provided the operator displays the necessary finesse.

And with that in mind, what would be wrong with oh, let me think.....say a nice Mercian Audax with oh, let me think.....say a nice Nexus 7 speed internal hub, or perhaps one of the Sturmey-Archers?

How much efficiency does an internal geared hub give up to a derailleur?

Rick Chasteen, wondering about these and other things in Kansas City
