Subject: [CR]Lambert Success - Sort of

Thanks to a lot of parts from list members, finally got my early 70's Lambert sufficiently assembled to take a couple of short test rides today, a total of only maybe 2 miles. These were successful in that: (a) the aluminum forks did not break in half and (b) the crankarms didn't fall off the non-tapered axle. However, mine is one of the Lamberts with the original Lambert-brand rear derailleur, which shifts like a pig (at the risk of offending pigs). The range of cage travel is so limited, and the parallelogram return spring so weak, that you can either set it up to shift onto the largest cog or the smallest cog, but not both, even on a 5 speed FW. Thus, I have an 8 speed. Maybe that's why a lot of Lamberts had triples - so you could actually get 12 gears (maybe). I think we should have a special group ride for Lambert owners at next year's Cirque. We set off closely followed by the sag wagon and the ride ends when the first fork breaks or a crankarm falls off. Estimated ride length 5 miles or less. Those who survive the ride then gather at the Spring Garden to celebrate having cheated death again, and to toast the memory of less fortunate Lambert owners. Anyone like to nominate another marque worthy to participate in this daredevil event? Perhaps any bike equipped with Cinelli M-71 pedals?

Regards,
