But if the frame is from the very late '70s or the '80s you should carefully examine the dropout before making any assumptions, regardless of which type of derailleur was standard equipment on the bike. I've seen bikes from those years (including my own) with Simplex RD mechanisms attached in the manner that Jerry described - but the Simplex dropouts were actually threaded and also had the integral rotation stops.
