In the 70's I wrote for a now-forgotten paper called Competitive Cycling. The most interesting thing I was ever asked to do was transcribe a long interview with Jack Disney detailing racing from the late 40's to the early 60's. It seems like there was considerable track racing in that time span with almost no paved tracks, except for a number of "street sprint" type of races held on closed-off straight stretches of road!
