I'll second that; but I really don't think using old brake blocks is a good idea, either. You'll probably find that they're about the consistency of a brick, and will crumble or otherwise come apart if you get them warm. Once the rubber has oxidized/deteriorated due to age, ozone, etc., they're probably unsafe.

Save the original shoes for show, and put a set of KoolStops or the like on the bike for riding.
