Just like back in the day of friction some people lubed their chains and maintained equipment, others didn't, 9 or 10 speed Chorus doesn't lubricate itself. It also doesn't set it self up to shift properly. I can tell you for a fact that my 10 speed stuff is as silent as anything I have ever ridden. Some people like to use special lubes like white lightening that needs to be reapplied every 80 miles. Not very effective and adds to drivetrain noise. I have friends who shift hard under heavy load into gears that are not appropriate -- they also ride the large chainrings in uphill situations. Some of my friends even think that small small works and big big. Not an equipment problem just the rider. I had a racer stay with me from France many years ago and he stated to me you Americans like those big chainrings too much you need to learn to spin. This guy has legs as big as an elephant. Equipment has a lifespan but you shorten it greatly when you abuse it and don't do maintenance.
