Early C-Record (Corsa-Record) cogs used a chart that told you how to index the individual cogs in relation to each other depending on which combination of cogs you wanted to use for your freehub. You lined up letters according to the chart as you slid the cogs and the body. This was supposed to give you optimum index shifting performance.

This was replaced with a system of spines with one extra wide spline that only allowed you to assemble the cogs in one order.

At least that is what I remember without looking up the answer ;)
