While you can get some interesting reading from Smith's "A Social History of the Bicycle", one should be aware that the history in it is fraught with errors. However, for anyone looking for a copy, there are currently four for sale online through ABE from $25 to $37.50:
A much better book on bicycle history is Andrew Ritchie's "King of the Road". The research is better, and it has lots of pictures. 3 currently for sale on ABE. $10 to $30.
