hey there roy,

if cost is an issue, i'll share what has worked for me in installing/removing headsets, since cost has been a factor for me as well. i realize this may be on the crude side of things, but . . ..

1) head tube fixed cup remover: long stick of solid brass or aluminum. i place the tip of the stick inside the head tube, right at the spot where the bearing race inner "lip" ends. start tapping and work your way gently aroudn the circumference of the lip until the cups are out. i use this for removing the race on the fork crown as well. clamp the fork steerer in a wooden clamping block, (upside down), and tap the race from below.

2) head tube fixed cup installer: get a long threaded rod, bigger is better (it think i use a one inch diameter). if you can find 'em, a couple soft metal disks (i.e. brass or aluminum) with a hole in em. if no disks, big washers work too. thread a couple nuts onto one end of the rod, tightening them against each other. put on one disk, then one fixed cup, then thread the rod throgh the head tube, put on another disk, and tighten the hole thing up with another nut. compress the fixed cup into postion by tightening the nuts.

3) fork crown race installer aluminum pipe that fits snug over the fork steerer, and whose outside diameter matches closely the diameter of the bearing race. place race into position, slide pipe over steerer, and tap gently

have fun!
