Take pictures, hoard receipts, print similar auction results as they occur on ebay. All of these items are more useful than an appraisal in my opinion. I've never had to claim a collectible bike, but I have made a claim on a collectible car. The pictures and maintenance records established the condition, then readily available auction records established the price range. I didn't have any problem once I produced the paperwork. Used component groups are fairly easy to price unless they are super rare parts. The frames are fairly easy to price as well, again, with the few exceptions of the super models, like Confente. I think that even a letter from some of the esteemed CR members might suffice to establish a credible estimate if you have pictures to substantiate the actual model, condition, and parts. Lou Deeter, expecting an even bigger cold wave this weekend--could hit 48 degrees in Orlando. Balmy 86 degrees right now.
