Sugino Maxy's were typical on Japanese bikes one step from the bottom. Typical Miyata, Nishiki, or Fuji frames might have been mild steel or straight guage chromoly.

My Crescent Stainless (Mark IX) was originally equiped with a three-arm Maxy. The pictures in the following are page are of the Mk XX (Campy NR) and Mk XI (Super Maxy), but there's a little blurb or text about the Mk IX. I believe the frame was basically the same between the three Mk's but mine is very poorly finished around the lugs and bb shell. Mine also would require a drop bolt to use a std reach sidepull w 700c.

I also remember them on a bottom o' the line Austro Daimler. I can't remember the model name. I believe that it had at least three tubes in Reynolds 531.

On the three-arm Maxy, the outer ring and the spider where cast in one piece. Sugino was helping bike makers meet a price point and didn't expect the purchaser to ever change rings, either for gearing options or wear.

I don't know who did the bates-lee ftp pages, but if you're on the list, I offer my gratitude. They're great.
