Italvega became Univega when they wanted to "broaden" their horizons.

I used to ride a trusty and very large Takara (means "I Love It" ?) while in college up in the NC mountains. I believe that Soma bikes were the same as the Takaras, if perhaps a year or so later in availability in my area.
