I could just about swear that I heard from Reynolds that 531 and 753 were the same alloy, only different in the heat-treatment. 531 being normalized, 753 being quenched and tempered. This of course makes sense from an economic point of view, as melting a different vat of steel for such a low-volume product wouldn't be worth it unless absolutely necessary. Does anyone have a reference that really lists 753 as a separate alloy?

I was also told (can't remember by whom though) that the idea that 5-to-3-to-1 was a formula of some kind was never really true, and of course the formula changed over the years while the name didn't, so it certainly wasn't true by the time 753 came out.
