Trying to get a model and year for this gitane. My guess is it's a step over entry level, along the lines of a Raleigh competition:

Metallic maroon paint, yellow Gitane sticker on headtube and downtube. Foil "Gitane Nantes France" sticker on seat tube (wrinkled by some idiot shop rat clamping it in a workstand). No tubing stickers, and no decal to indicate a model name.

No brazeons. Rear dropouts are the funky, cutout like a cage ones with a J-shaped slot. Front are forged simplex. Takes a 25.4 seat pin (may really want 25.0, but came with 25.4). Tubing feels like straight gauge, with small seams visible inside the chainstays and seat tube. However, it's not the heavy nasty seam you see in gaspipe, and the bike is in the 25# range with steel rims.

Everything is french threaded, including the Sugino Maxy crank. Other components include mafac racers (with all the correct hardware, yea!), plastic simplex shifters and rear derailleur. Front changer has been upgraded to a suntour Spirt. Headset looks like a knockoff of the steel stronglight competition. Wheels are "Normandy" hubs with 27" weinman checkerboard steel rims. Stem is a hollow Pivo, and I cannot find a label on the bars.

thanks for reading this far, - Craig Sandvik in Berkeley CA USA
