Hi Garth,

Please review my contribution of Raleigh/Huffy at the following URL:

The bottom line is that Raleigh had old outdated factories that would not run efficiently. The Orient offered much lower costs with the same or better production quantity. It is fair to note the 90% of todays bikes are made and assembled in the Orient and Huffy in 1983 wanted to try this to experiment with this because at that time, all Huffy bikes were made in the USA.

If the mystery Raleigh 555 SL tubing is really 555 Tange Prestige tubing just dressed up with a Reynolds-look-a-like tubing sticker, then I fail to see how this would be a money saving move. Wouldn't it be cheaper for Raleigh to use Reynolds 531 tubing, then to buy Tange tube sets from Japan? Even though Reynolds is a more expensive tube set, it must be cheaper to use your own then to buy from someone else. Garth Libre in Surfside Fl.
