Any chemists out there? A quick search at ask jeeves didn't get any good results.

Obtained from petroleum during refining, it is used in candles, for coating paper, and for various other purposes.

Not sure what makes paraffin /different/ from other waxes. But, it does sound like an appropriate thing to use on hoods...
