In fairness that Sloane book was written in 1980. So for whatever is right or wrong with cottered cranks if I had a bike that was period correct I guess I'd learn to deal with the cotters. I think you can get by with a "C" clamp (and appropiate bit of pipe) if the special tool seems a bit pricey.
