I do not know about particular dimensions but I have encountered obstinant stems. Sometimes it helps to go from the other side. Sometimes the stem needs to be in the perfect position at the bend in order to get by. It seems that if it is one degree off it will not go by but if you get it in the perfect position it will go by without even scraping off any aluminum. Assuming that the parts are compatible, I would be patient and try getting the stem on using various angle approach's (do remember to have the stem end up the correct way when it is in the center).
