Prying an aluminum stem can result in snaping it! I sometimes slip the wedge of a screwdriver tip into the slot to relieve pressure and keep from scratching the bars but yours sound like they might be incompatable. I'm not totally up on GB bars and stems, but it seems like the simple stem with the round end and large GB on each side takes a plain-type bar.
