I think we all gamble with old aluminium handlebars. In theory these are critical parts that should be replaced after a period of use anyway. Personally, I don't pay enough attention to this, either inspecting or replacing. I'll get religion after I break a bar.

Also their are lightweight heat treated bars that such as the TTT SL. These will be more subjuct to cracking from a hole and should never be drilled. So drill holes at your own risk and best not at all.
