I think you are talking about Dervla Murphy's "Full Tilt: Ireland to India with a Bicycle" originally published in GB in 1965, published in the USA in 1986, now out of print. She has a number of great cycle-touring books, the ones on Northern Ireland and Africa are worth reading -- pretty remarkable adventures.
