There was an interesting article/interview in the Rivendell Reader a few years ago, when Joe Starck started building for them. He talks about his years with Trek (did front triangle work) and how they managed to cope with volume production woes. Apparently the workforce was a pretty motley crew, and speed/volume with low cost was definately the priority. This probably accounts for the inconsistancy of the rear spacing. The interview sure paints a different picture of Trek's production than what the marketing image of the time suggested.
