I admit, I haven't tried a full Mavic group from 1979...but I would still go all japanese. Suntour Cyclone/Sugino/Sunshine (the top-line hubs)/SR/Nitto/Araya/Superbe brakes (they were out by '79 weren't they?)

Cyclone derailleurs were lighter, and shifted *far* better, than anything else I know of at the time. All the other top Japanese stuff that was not Shimano was beautifully made. Plus, it would have been cheap compared to Campy and Shimano...or anything else, probably.
