My own choice would be 1984/85 as both the end of manufacturing of
top-quality drop-parallelogram rear derailleurs (Campy SR and Simplex Super
LJ) and the beginning of the end of steel lugged frames as the mainstream
cyclists' definition of "best bike;" 1985 was the year that Trek and Raleigh
introduced glued frames in large numbers, 1984 was the first year for
Cannondale being available nationally and Vitus making large-scale
appearances. Like others, thinking out loud.
