Keith,

Glad to see you on the list. On Dervla Murphy (sic?), she did love Afghanistan and for good reason. Of course the land mines will keep me away from cycling for a while these days. It's a natural cross roads for cycling to the southern hemisphere in that part of the world. In about 1971 Colin Martin cycled from England to Australia through there. He rode a Moulton and his bike is featured in the Moulton brochure under a road sign; Kabul 1000 km.

I don't know what you mean by not being smart (She didn't ride a Campy 10 group on a Pinarello) but she chose a sturdy classic English roadster with one trouble free gear for her trip. She then proceeded to cross every mountain pass possible; usually in winter snow. Smart maybe, maybe not. But spirited and adventurous. 40 years and 6 or more books later she is still on the road and writing about it!

Have another look.

Gilbert Anderson
