The first pair of these I ever saw was on Bernard Thevenet's bike at the World Championships at Montreal in 1974 (Spectators were allowed to get quite close to the machines before the race). I'm not sure if they were being sold at that time or if they were still a special team issue only item. By the way, they didn't help Thevenet that day - Merckx outsprinted Poulidor for the victory and Thevenet was nowhere to be seen at the end.
