One point that no one mentioned, is that solid axles and nuts are used on track bikes due to the closeness of the racing. QR levers and even wingnuts are OK for road use, in fact they were introduced for road use.

However on a track, where the racers are often physically very close together, levers and wingnuts are just there to catch other peoples wheels, or to stick in to other people when they fall on top off you.

All good tracks should only allow bikes using the correct fasteners, as well as insisting on other items, such as correctly plugged handlebars. If you start track racing please remember these points for the safety of yourself and others.
