Subject: [CR]Sam Braxton-Framebuilder/Shopowner

Dear "CR" list and Robbie Fellows, Sam Braxton was a framebuilder/bicycle shop owner, husband and father who ran Braxton Bicycles in Missoula,Montana. Sam Braxton died about ten years ago. His shop was located at the crossroads of cross-country bicyclists in "Big Sky Country", U.S.A. Sam Braxton, had a very large reputation for building all sorts of custom bicycles in the Missoula area. Sam rebuilt my cross-country touring bicycle. He performed warranty work, and built up a new set of heavy duty touring wheels. He had decals for "wheels built by Braxton".Sam Braxton had very definite ideas regarding gearing for touring bicycles. He wrote a small book for BIKECENTENNIAL/now ADVENTURE CYCLING headquartered in Missoula,Montana, concerning touring bicycles and what was needed for touring bicycles in regards to gearing,racks,brakes,etc..His perspective was from seeing what worked and what broke from heavy duty touring, after long hard miles, and many, many years of touring cyclists "passing through". It sounds like your recently acquired bicycle could be a "Braxton" custom made but more likely one that received some of Sam Braxton's custom "upgrades".Stay tuned to the CR website for U.S.A. builder's....."Sam Braxton" is coming.... Yours truly,Martin Walsh in Vienna,Va
