There is no check valve in a Silca frame-it pump. The only thing keeping the pump body from filling with air at the same pressure as your tire, and thus exploding, is the presta valve on the tire itself. It isn't usually a problem to attach the Campy head in such a way that the presta valve functions properly, but if anything goes wrong and the valve stays open after the air is forced in, it just rushes back out and..... BOOM! Silca pumps look cool on vintage bikes, but some newer designs are better at getting air into your tire. I like the Zefal HPX. The non-frame-fit version is that HP, which has been around since the mid-70's, at least. Still very retro, and no explosions. Tom Dalton Bethlehem, PA Jonathan Cowden <> wrote: Hi all. I bought a silca pump thru ebay a couple of weeks back and yesterday had an opportunity to use it for the first time. The handle blew out the back while I was trying to inflate the tire. I re-inserted it, screwed it down, and tried again. It blew off. Someone told me that the threads were toast. He's right. The handle won't stay in even when there is hardly any pressure in the tire. Is there any solution here or is my pump a gonner? Jon
