Hi Fred. Are you talking about Proteus Bikes in College Park, MD or was there one in Colorado? They (Collefge Park Proteus) made custom Proteus bikes and sold a lot of Lotus. Were the Proteus bikes that well known or just of local fame to us because we are nearby? They still are there but I think there was another bike also called Proteus at one time ? I was in the Proteus shop last week. They still had a Proteus or two for sale and a few other vintage goodies to love such as a Bob Jackson. Another customer had his vintage Bianchi;the time before, the first time I met him, a restored Guerciotti. This fellow was excellent at building his own wheels. He was looking at the Vintage Mavic and Fiamme (a bit more delicate they say) rims.

> Well, when I mentioned Yamaguchi I was thinking of > the one in Colorado. I seem to recall that he built > some frames in Japan before coming over to the US... John, I guess that's what I'm curious about... When he arrived at Proteus he was already an accomplished builder, although totally unknown in the U.S. So I was wondering if he built under his own name in Japan or if he was "forced" to build frames which were identified with some "master builder". No one at Proteus seemed to know, since he really did simply arrive at their threshhold one day as if he had dropped from the sky! But I think you'd have to consider any the bikes he built in this country to be American. Although, much like Singer, we could debate how to properly pronounce his name. :-) Best regards, Fred Rednor - Arlington, Virginia
