Basically it's a bike that can be split in two for travel. Here's some pics of a Herse version <http://www.classicrendezvous.com/France/Herse_UB_bike.htm>. I think, but could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time), that Rene Herse was the first to use the term. I have seen pictures of "demountables" going back to the turn of the century so It's not a new design. During my two years working for Bike Friday I saw more different "Pull-apart" bikes than you would believe. I have a "demountable" bike that those of you who made the last Rose Bowl saw my "rat bike". Mine is a retrofit from my friend and "Master Framebuilder" Jeff Lyon on a 70's Nishiki.
