In defense of Alex Wetmore, who owns and runs our host server, I'd like to correct that a little. His server was up throughout, but mail servers elsewhere couldn't resolve the IP address for the domain name "bikelist.org" due to problems with the Name Server (DNS) database belonging to Alex's DNS provider. The situation was not his fault and out of his control.

DNS is analogous to the phone book for the Internet: you can't call someone by their name, you have to look up their phone number first. It's like Alex's phone was working but the phone book didn't have a listing for bikelist.org, so we couldn't call.

Alex does a great job keeping his server up for us all the time. It's just the rest of the Internet that's unreliable!
